Background

The American Indian Health Service of Chicago, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Illinois, City of Chicago on December 1974. It was organized and operates exclusively as a non-profit charitable organization with tax-exempt status 501 © and 509 (1), (2) or (3) of the Internal revenue Code of 1954. The organization is governed by a voluntary community based Board of Directors who are from the Chicago American Indian community. The Board of Directors are responsible for governance and directing the administration of the corporate health program, finance management, facilities and equipment utilization to provide health services to the American Indian people in the City of Chicago. The target populations are medically underserved members of federally recognized American Indian tribes and family members residing in the City of Chicago area.

American Indian Health Service of Chicago provides primary healthcare, mental health and community health services. Its service delivery area is 50 miles from the present address and encompasses the Metropolitan Chicago area. The State of Illinois and City of Chicago are not “Indian Country” as defined by Law. Therefore, the population utilizing AIHSC are not recipients of the Federal programs available for the Reservations tribes, i.e., Contract Health Services and others. If the patient has no insurance and if they qualify then we encourage them to apply to the Illinois State Medicaid or Medicare program. Patients who do not qualify for entitlement health coverage programs are put on a sliding fee scale for in-house services. Patients are never turned away for their inability to pay for services; we will work with them to provide health care that is in within our financial and service capabilities.

American Indian Health Service of Chicago maintains a continued affiliation with the community organizations within the City of Chicago that serve the Chicago American Indian community. Further, American Indian Health Service of Chicago has developed working relationships with other Urban Indian Health programs and national associates.
