NatHIVe American Awareness

NatHIVe American Awareness Chicago (NAAC) is a project of American Indian Health Service of Chicago. NAAC works to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on urban American Indian communities and to empower individuals and communities to prevent new HIV infections. It is the only program in Illinois focused on delivering HIV prevention services specifically to American Indians.

The HIV Prevention Project is funded through grants from the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Center for Minority Health, Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council, and Indian Health Service.

Programs and Services

NatHIVe American Awareness has three main program areas:

Prevention Education Workshops

AIHSC staff offers culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS education workshops that explore topics like communication, the importance of HIV testing, alcohol and drug use, sexual assault, and the role of community in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. By working with community organizations, schools and colleges, faith based groups, and social service agencies, NAAC reaches people with information about HIV/AIDS prevention. Workshops are tailored for American Indian communities and are intended to teach HIV prevention skills and to empower American Indian communities to respond to HIV/AIDS and other health issues. To schedule a workshop for your group, please call (773) 883-9100.

Community Outreach

The Outreach Team at AIHSC attends American Indian community events, such as powwows and community meetings, to distribute information about HIV/AIDS, alcohol and substance use, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault and other health issues. The Outreach team also attends local health and information fairs to promote AIHSC services and events.

Rapid HIV Testing

The AIHSC Medical Clinic now offers free, rapid, confidential HIV testing. HIV testing is recommended for everyone, regardless of risk.  We also offer individual HIV prevention and risk reduction counseling to interested individuals.  Please call (773) 883-9100 for more information or to make an appointment.
